What is LED Lamps?

What is LED lamps?

LED lamps are made from a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light (known as LED, Light Emitting Diode). It is the latest technology in energy efficient lighting. Due to the solid form of LED, beside it is extremely efficient; it is also long-lasting light type. Different technology applied for other lamps type such as fluorescent and incandescent. They consist of filaments in glass bulbs or bulbs gases. Whilst, LEDs consist small capsules or lenses in which tiny chip are placed on heat-conducting materials.

How LED lamps compared with other lamps types?

The life span of LED lamps is longer than other types of lamps, as below:

Lighting technology
Estimated lifespan*
LED
30,000 – 50,000 hours
CFL (Fluorescent lamps)
8,000 – 15,000 hours
Halogen
1,000 – 5,000 hours
Incandescent
1,000 hours

Note: * Depending on the globe

Incandescent

Incandescent lamps are the old-fashioned light bulbs invented by Thomas Edison. It used a filament strung across tow metal bars in the center of the globe. Inefficiency happened because they only converted 5-10% of the energy into light and the rest was converted to heat.

Halogen

Halogen lamps appearance may look similar with incandescent lamps, but do not have a filament between the bars. Moreover, regular-looking downlights that have not been changed to energy saving fitting are likely to be Halogen. They generally have strong brightness, but less efficient compared with fluorescent lamps.

CFL (Compact Fluorescent lamp)

CFLs are the coiled bulbs that have replaced many traditional incandescent light bulbs. CFLs are about 80% more efficient than incandescent lamps.
